“I Was Scared To Release ‘Asylum’ Because Of The Lyrics” – OliveTheBoy

Even though he started music at age 18, Ghanaian singer Joel Bonsu, better known as Olivetheboy, is well known in the Ghanaian music scene as one of the best in terms of wordplay in adult music, making him the newest baddest boy, learning from the legendary Daddy Lumba and Kwabena Kwabena.
Being 18 and having such strong lyrics became a problem for Olivetheboy as he was about to release the song that blew him up.
He said in an interview on 3Music TV that he was uncertain of how listeners would respond to the song’s emotionally charged lyrics, which examine love from a contentious and “toxic” perspective. He was even cautioned by close allies that the public could find the content too harsh or disturbing.
Asylum depicts grief in a dramatic way, addressing the emotional and mental anguish that can result from a failed romantic relationship. The song’s lyrics raise concerns but also strike a deep chord with listeners by implying that a lover’s desertion might cause a mental collapse or even result in death.
Asylum defies predictions to become one of the top songs of 2024 in spite of the early skepticism.
It was nominated for “Most Popular Song of the Year” at the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards because of its unadulterated narrative and depth of emotion.
