Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has criticised the practice of men kneeling to propose marriage, arguing that the gesture could be interpreted as giving the woman headship of the family.
Edochie made the comments during his appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by Is Bae U.
According to the actor, kneeling to present an engagement ring carries a deeper meaning. He compared the act to the way Catholics kneel when entering a church.
“If you step down on your knee and you offer a woman a ring, you are conceding headship of the family to that woman,” he said.
Edochie believes many people who embrace the practice do not fully understand what the gesture represents.
He also connected the practice to marriage traditions in Western countries, particularly issues surrounding the division of property when marriages end.
“So if your wife decides to divorce you, she’s entitled to maybe half or 75% of what you have,” he said.
His comments have sparked conversations online about marriage traditions, gender roles and the symbolism behind marriage proposals.
