Nigerian rapper Odumodu blvck has come under criticism after claiming that hip-hop is no longer relevant.
The controversy began when the rapper reacted to a ranking of Nigerian artistes with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify. Noticing the absence of rappers on the list, Odumodublvck posted on X: “Hip Hop is dead.”
His comment revived a long-running debate within the music industry and echoed a similar statement previously made by Wizkid.
The post generated mixed reactions online. While some users agreed that hip-hop has lost commercial dominance in Nigeria, others argued that the genre remains influential both in Africa and globally.
The Spotify ranking was dominated by Afrobeats and contemporary music stars, with Burna Boy leading the list with over 40 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Tems.
Other artistes in the top 10 included Rema, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Omah Lay, Davido, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Asake.
Omah Lay (11.24m), Davido (10.83m), CKay (10.71m), Fireboy DML (9.23m), and Asake (8.69m) complete the top 10
The discussion has reignited conversations about the commercial appeal of hip-hop in Nigeria and whether streaming numbers accurately reflect the genre’s overall influence and cultural impact.
