No SIM card will be blocked – Sam George assures Stubborn Academy

Sam Nartey George, a member of parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has assured Ghanaians that their SIM cards won’t be blocked if they can’t re-register them by the deadline.

The Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has set Friday, September 30, 2022, as the deadline for SIM card re-registration.

The deadline was originally July 31, 2022, but it has been postponed to September 30.

According to the minister, difficulties included the sluggish rollout of a self-serving registration app and the slow acquisition of Ghana Cards, which are necessary for registration, necessitated the extension.

“Upon consultation with the industry and in view of the challenges enumerated above, I have very reluctantly decided to grant a final conditional extension.

“The programme will be extended to September 30 to end on the anniversary of its commencement. That will give us one full year of SIM registration to be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from fully receiving certain services including voice and data services. It will also be more expensive to use unregistered SIMs. The full range of punitive measures will be announced at another press briefing in September,” the minister stated.

Announcing that all SIM cards not registered by September 30 would be completely disabled, the National Communication Authority reaffirmed the original deadline for the activity.
