Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover believes Ghana football began losing its way after former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi left office.
The former footballer and politician said Nyantakyi had built strong influence within African football and could have used that position to further Ghana’s interests if he had remained in charge.
“Football started going down after Kwesi Nyantakyi was removed. If Nyantakyi was still there, he would have continued the good work he was doing,” Titus Glover said on Angel FM.
Nyantakyi served as GFA president from 2005 to 2018 and also rose to senior positions within CAF and FIFA.
Titus Glover said Nyantakyi had positioned himself among the key decision-makers in African football, but eventually lost his position after falling into what he described as a trap set by his detractors.
“He had risen to the level where he was part of the decision-makers in African football. But he fell into a trap set for him by his detractors, and he easily fell into it,” he said.
Titus Glover also weighed in on Ghana’s goalkeeping situation, saying Benjamin Asare should be given preference over Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
“I will prefer Benjamin Asare as the first-choice goalkeeper rather than Ati-Zigi. Look at the losses we frequently have when Ati-Zigi is in post,” he said.
The former Tema East MP, who said he played football for Afienya United before entering politics, also compared the current state of the sport with the football brand Ghana had during his playing days.
“I was a footballer before I became a politician. I played for Afienya United. The kind of football we had at that time and what we are playing now are vastly different,” he said.
For Titus Glover, the problems facing the Black Stars are therefore part of a wider decline in Ghana football that needs to be addressed beyond the national team.
