The constant comparison between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is one of football’s most lasting discussions, and Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has added his voice to it.
Even though these legends are no longer playing on the top stages of European football, discussions about their legacies still take center stage among supporters, pundits, and even other professionals.
The difference in style has never been more obvious, with Messi taking his skill to the MLS with Inter Miami and Ronaldo now displaying his timeless physicality in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League with Al-Nassr. Despite this, their rivalry is still a hot issue, according to Goal.
As part of his media appearances as an ambassador for CAF’s African School Football Championship, Gyan was asked to comment on the worldwide discussion during a recent interview on TV3’s New Day show.
The former Black Stars captain was first hesitant to address such a divisive topic, but in the end, he provided a nuanced viewpoint that struck a balance between objective and personal affection.
Gyan started with “media rivalry,” implying that the long-standing analogy could have originated more in public debate than on the pitch.
Gyan said:
“They don’t play the same position, but for me, you can compare Messi with Maradona and Abedi Pele and those players. But for me, [Lionel] Messi is a gifted one. He can stay for two months and play.
”
“On the flip side, Ronaldo depends on his fitness to play. And that is why I respect Ronaldo for that. He got to where he is with hard work and dedication.
”
Ronaldo is a complete player. He’s got everything. But I will still prefer Messi.”
