Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has sent a confident message ahead of Ghana’s crucial FIFA World Cup clash against England, insisting the squad believes it can compete with anyone on football’s biggest stage.
Ghana head into Tuesday’s Group L showdown full of confidence after Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match.
Speaking to Ghanafa.org, Ayew said the Black Stars are fully focused on the task ahead but will continue to approach the tournament one game at a time.
“We have two important games left. We take it game by game,” Ayew said.
“We are focused on getting the three points in the next match, and after that we will think about the last game.”
England opened their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, and another win would secure their place in the knockout stage. Ghana, however, know a positive result would leave them in a strong position heading into their final group match against Croatia.
Ayew acknowledged the quality of England but said the Black Stars have the belief to cause an upset.
“It’s always difficult playing at the World Cup. There are no easy games, but we believe in ourselves, and we feel that anything is possible.”
Victory over England would move Ghana a step closer to the knockout stage and keep alive the Black Stars’ impressive record of never losing their second match at a FIFA World Cup.
With confidence high after the Panama victory, Ayew believes Ghana are ready for another major test as they look to take another big step towards the Round of 32.
