Why I Scrapped Ministry Of Information – Mahama Explains

The decision to disband the Ministry of Information during his present administration has been explained by President John Dramani Mahama. The President reduced the number of his ministries from thirty to twenty-three by signing an Executive Instrument (E.I.) on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
One of the main modifications was the division of the Ministry of Youth and Sports into the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. Reactions to the dismissal of the Ministry of Information also differed.
President Mahama clarified that the choice was in line with his campaign promise to form a small government with just 60 ministers at a meeting with the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) leadership on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
He went into further detail on the appointment of a Minister of State to oversee government communications.
That was somewhat a reaction to our pledge to reduce government, but it also required us to be extremely strategic. We specifically addressed the government’s information flow since it is essential to the accomplishment of all our goals. Therefore, the mechanism we established was to provide the presidency with information.
That’s how come we have a Minister of State in charge of government communications. And then to make sure that we’re able to anchor it with a string of strong communications professionals in the most critical sectors so that we’re able to guarantee as much information flow to the public as possible.
