An explosion at stores selling mining explosives in Odumase, close to Konongo, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has resulted in one verified death and several injuries, including to firemen.
According to reports, the fire began at one of the stores that sold dynamite and other explosives used by nearby miners.
This set off a tremendous explosion that damaged structures and injured several people.
Authorities have verified that a person was killed in the explosion, but the reason is yet unknown.
Some victims apparently had sections of their corpses severed, and firefighters who were sent in to put out the fire were also hurt.
There are now additional safety worries in the neighborhood because the explosion happened only a few meters from a gas station.
Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden revealed that a homeowner who attempted to alert firemen to the danger died.
He was attempting to signal the firemen to retreat, but the explosion happened before he could get out. I’ve been informed that he passed away, and he was seriously hurt,” he said.
As investigations continue, authorities continue to determine the complete extent of the damage and casualties.
