NPP’s 2024 Election defeat: Committee report blames Akufo-Addo’s leadership

A report analyzing the NPP’s heavy defeat in the 2024 elections attributes the loss to President Akufo-Addo’s leadership style, labeling him as resistant and indifferent to public issues.

As detailed in the report obtained by MyNewsGh, 87% of those surveyed believed the President ignored advice.

Initially approachable during his first term, his second term was characterized by stubbornness and holding grudges, severely affecting the party’s electoral success.

One significant issue was his refusal to replace ministers, particularly Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is his cousin.

When 87 MPs, primarily from the Ashanti Region, called for Ofori-Atta’s dismissal, the President remained unmoved, marginalizing many MPs and deepening divisions within the party.

The forced resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a respected MP from Ashanti, exacerbated tensions.

His replacement with someone from the Central Region, who failed to rejuvenate the party, was widely seen as a strategic error.

Discontent was prevalent across various constituencies.

In Obuasi West, Hon. Kweku Kwarteng, a deputy finance minister, was compelled to lead the Finance Committee, only to be removed under vague circumstances, nearly costing him his seat and underscoring internal strife.

The report highlights profound factionalism, with some respondents mentioning an “Akyem Mafia” agenda targeting Ashanti MPs.

In conclusion, the findings suggest that the NPP’s collapse was self-inflicted, resulting from poor leadership decisions and unresolved internal disputes.
