“We Didn’t Care In Our Second Term, That Led To Our Defeat” – Adwoa Safo

Former Gender Minister Sarah Adwoa Safo said that the NPP government’s election failure during its second term was partly caused by its disregard for popular concerns.

She recognized that the party’s strategy in its first and second periods differed, stating that there was early zeal but subsequently complacency in an interview with Joy Prime’s The Pulse.

“The first term, in my opinion, was excellent. That desire and readiness to fulfill the high expectations of Ghanaians was evident.

As we entered our second term, however, it seemed to me that we were on our rollicking trip, not paying attention, and not hearing,”
she said.

She emphasized the general discontent among important parties, such as the young, chiefs, pastors, and party members, and the fact that their complaints were not given any weight.

“Everything we did seemed to be done as though no elections were coming up, with chiefs, pastors, party members, and the young all grumbling. Governance is about governance, not about the next election, but you should be aware that your performance history will determine whether you are re-elected,” she said.

She claims that many people were disillusioned by the government’s failure to address their issues. She acknowledged that “at that point, we were not listening,” raising the possibility that the government had succumbed to the “normal second-term syndrome,” which occurs when ruling parties lose touch with the people.
