Amid claims of financial irregularities, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has blocked all bank accounts associated with Chairman Wontumi, whose real name is Bernard Antwi Boasiako, and his mining firm, Akonta Mining.
Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which gives the FIC the authority to limit access to accounts in cases where there is a reasonable suspicion of illegal financial activity, is where the freeze was started, according to FIC sources.
The FIC ordered all transactions involving Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining, and Hallmark Civil Engineering Limited to be immediately stopped “pending further directives” in a written directive sent to banking institutions.
The action is a component of a larger probe into possible financial malfeasance and money laundering.
The public’s scrutiny of Chairman Wontumi, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, has grown.
Following the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources’ order to cancel its operating license, his mining firm, Akonta Mining, has been the subject of controversy.
Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah called Akonta Mining a “criminal syndicate” during a news conference on Monday, April 21, 2025, and charged the company with engaging in illegal mining operations in protected forest areas.
