After years of a hectic White House schedule, Michelle Obama has addressed the accusations that she was divorcing former President Barack Obama for just seeking more time for herself.
In the April 9 episode of the podcast “Work in Progress with Sophia Bush,” the former first lady discussed how having greater freedom to do anything from working on her tennis game to going out to lunch with her pals sparked rumors about her 32-year marriage.
She said:
“The interesting thing is that, when I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it, and I’m OK,’” Obama said. “That’s the thing that we as women, I think, struggle with: disappointing people. So much so that this year people were — they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I were divorcing.”
“This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she said. “But that’s what society does to us. We start actually, finally going, ‘What am I doing? Who am I doing this for’? And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.”
“It’s whatever I want,” “It’s also a little scary because as a mom and a busy person, I always had — it was somebody else’s excuse. Why didn’t I do this? Why haven’t I gone there? Well, I have to make sure the girls are OK, or my husband’s president, so I can’t do that.”
“Now I can’t blame my decisions and indecisions on anyone other than me,” “As a woman, I think if I’m honest with myself, I could have made a lot of these decisions years ago. But I didn’t give myself that freedom.
