Cameroonian footballer Modeste Mbami, who played for Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain before retiring at Le Havre, has died at the age of 40. According to reports, the cause of death was a heart attack.
He rose to prominence in Ligue 1 in the early 2000s before returning to France to complete his career. He also made appearances in Spain and Colombia.
When he played for PSG from 2003 to 2006, he established himself as one of the league’s best defensive midfielders.
He won two Coupe de Frances during that time (2004 and 2006).
The gold medal he won with Cameroon at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, made him a hero above all else.
The Indomitable Lions defeated Spain 5-3 on penalties in the final, but Mbami shines against Brazil.
Mbami was also a member of the Cameroonian national football team, which did not qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany after finishing second in their qualification group, behind Côte d’Ivoire.
He declined the opportunity to coach the Cameroon national team in November 2019. Between 2000 and 2009, Modeste Mbami represented Cameroon 37 times.
