“Me Not Winning The AFCON Kills Me Everyday” – Sammy Kuffour

Throughout his remarkable career, Samuel Osei Kuffour, mostly known as Sammy Kuffour, the former Ghanaian international, has voiced his profound sorrow for not winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship with the Black Stars.
A notable gap in Kuffour’s accomplishments, who had great success at the club level, including winning the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich, was the lack of an AFCON trophy.
Between 1993 and 2006, the 48-year-old scored three goals and made 54 appearances for Ghana.
He emphasized the importance and difficulties of the continental tournament.
Former England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was harshly criticized by Kuffour in a recent interview with Sporty FM for disparaging the AFCON, saying,
“Carragher ought to be embarrassed. When Richards and Sturridge questioned him about his remark regarding the AFCON, he persisted because he lacks respect.
We have African players who have impacted the Premier League; therefore, Carragher should show us respect. During his tenure, did he win the Premier League?”
Kuffour discussed the human cost of losing the AFCON championship when looking back on his international career, stating,
“I was one of the few among us who never had the opportunity to win the AFCON. There is nothing I can show my kids, and it hurts me every day.”
Additionally, he emphasized the tournament’s competitive nature, pointing out that
“It’s a very difficult tournament to play because we know each other; the strength, the technique, and the understanding of the game are always the same. You can never underrate Ghana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria whenever they play each other.
