“Ghanaians Should Feel Free And Talk About Me, I’m At The Top” – Asamoah Gyan
With six goals in 11 games across three World Cups, Gyan is Africa’s all-time best scorer. He had an incredible career with the Ghana national team. But the memory of that momentous day haunts him and the football community, especially the Ghanaians in it.
Gyan had the chance to create history at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by leading Ghana to the semifinals, making them the first African team to do so. Luis Suarez of Uruguay made a last-minute handball in the penalty area, which gave rise to this opportunity.
Gyan went up to take the game-winning penalty, but the crossbar stopped him even though the goalie was sent the wrong way. Ghana eventually lost in the next penalty shootout, missing out on what appeared to be a semifinal spot.
However, he became and still is the laughing stock of Ghanaians, where they bring his name to any conversation involving a national issue, with people shifting blame on him and saying bad things wouldn’t have happened if he had scored that penalty.
When asked in a recent interview with Berla Mundi, Gyan revealed he no longer thinks about what Ghanaians say about him because he’s at the top and they should continue talking about him.
