“Lapaz Toyota Was The Turning Point Of My Career, I Would Have Quit Music Long Ago” – Guru

Guru, the Ghanaian rapper and the SRC president of the University of Ghana, has considered the significance of his 2011 hit song Lapaz Toyota, characterizing it as the turning point that catapulted him into mainstream popularity.

In an interview with Nana Romeo on the Atuu show, the musician described how he struggled to create another big hit despite previous hits with songs like Democracy and Kasiebo. He clarified that this time was characterized by doubt regarding his musical destiny.

Guru claims that Lapaz Toyota not only brought his career back to life but also made it possible for him to land his first record deal and other opportunities that had previously appeared unattainable.

Thinking back on that pivotal moment, he said:

The music that transported me to the successful folks was Lapaz Toyota. It made my brand known. It was quite challenging to create another hit after Democracy and Kasiebo. Lapaz Toyota changed everything for me; it even got me my first record label deal. I was having a lot of trouble and may have quit the music business early.
