Winning Artist of the Year would inspire female musicians – Wendy Shay

Wendy Shay says her journey in music, from rejection to recognition, has prepared her for greater success in the industry as she eyes a major win at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
The Artiste of the Year contender opened up about her expectations ahead of the awards, revealing that receiving seven nominations after seven years in the industry holds special meaning for her.
“Seven is one of my favourite numbers,” she said. “Last year was my seventh year in the industry, and now I have seven nominations.”
According to Wendy Shay, she remains confident about her chances in the Artiste of the Year category because of the effort and consistency she has shown over the past year.
“The numbers are already speaking for themselves,” she stated. “I have worked hard. I have done whatever an artist is supposed to do in that category.”
The singer highlighted her performances across different countries, including multiple back-to-back shows in Sierra Leone, as part of her strong year in music. She also pointed to the success of her hit song Too Late, which she says has surpassed 32 million views on YouTube.
Wendy Shay further mentioned her self-hosted Shake Concert, which recorded massive attendance and stands as one of her proudest achievements so far.
She added that winning Artiste of the Year would go beyond personal achievement and could motivate more women to pursue careers in music.
“It’s going to inspire a lot of female artists,” she said. “If Wendy Shay could do it, I can do it too.”
The musician recalled the criticism and resistance she faced when she first entered the industry under the management of Bullet.
She said those early experiences made her stronger and more focused on consistency.
“It’s going to be a testimony of hard work and not giving up,” she added.
Black Sherif was also mentioned during the conversation after publicly questioning why more people were not discussing Wendy Shay as a serious contender for Artist of the Year.
Reacting to his support, she expressed appreciation and described him as thoughtful and self-aware.
“I’m grateful he mentioned my name,” she said.
