Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP Gifty Klenam, who served two terms as Lower West Akim’s MP, has formally defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
After acquiring her NDC membership card in the Volta Region’s Anlo Constituency, the former MP made her choice public on Thursday morning, January 30, 2025.
Speaking to reporters, Klenam stressed how the NDC reflects her own beliefs and encouraged other disenchanted NPP members to have the courage to convert.
“I chose to join the NDC after consulting with my family because it is in line with my values and my vision for Mother Ghana,” she said.
She also said she was confident in the NDC’s 2024 platform, saying it offers the finest development roadmap for Ghana. She claims that after examining the party’s ideas, she is convinced that John Dramani Mahama’s leadership would bring about national transformation and prosperity for Ghanaians.
Although Klenam’s precise position inside the NDC is yet unknown, she has indicated that she is open to serving in any capacity. Connecting with the NDC grassroots, empowering them, and making sure they find opportunities here rather than overseas are her top priorities right now, she stated.
Klenam was a well-known member of the NPP; therefore, her defection has generated debate in Ghanaian politics.
