Singer Adomaa has revealed in a recent interview that when attending a boarding school outside of Ghana, a snide remark made about her skin tone nearly convinced her to bleach it.

The singer, who has most recently added acting to her résumé, said to content creator Yaa Somuah that despite growing up in a secure environment, she started to experience insecurities when she went to boarding school in Nigeria where she was constantly made fun of for having dark complexion.

She recalled how, because of her dark pigment, people had questioned her if the sun in Ghana burned people’s skin. As a result of the unfavorable remarks, she had thought about bleaching but ultimately decided against it.

She said: “I used to hear statements like Oh you are so dark, oh my God the sun in Ghana, does it burn people. It made me feel very very insecure, I am not proud of it but there are times I actually attempted bleaching just to fit in”.

“I don’t think it is normal for any human being to live their lives where everybody is a part of every single thing that they are doing.

The world of celebrities is not normal. Everyone, I believe, has vulnerable moments and everyday lives. There are some things you want to keep private, some things you want to share with family, some things you want to share with friends — there are layers to it all. But when you are in the spotlight, you have no privacy, and that is not normal.

Skin bleaching, often known as skin lightening, is a cosmetic surgery that tries to make darker patches of skin lighter or to give the skin a more uniformly whiter tone. It is typically employed to lessen the appearance of birthmarks and other discolorations (melasma).
