People in my village thought I was a witch because I was born with 12 toes – Enam

Ghanaian singer Enam has opened up about the discrimination she faced growing up after being born with 12 toes.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, Enam revealed that many people in her community believed she was a “witchy child” because of her condition.
“Growing up, it was very abnormal to people because people thought I was a witchy child,” she said. “That was why I was different.”
According to the singer, news of her birth spread quickly across the town, with many residents seeing it as a bad omen.
“When I was born, it was like a bad omen had set in my town,” she explained. “Everybody heard about it. It was like bad news that a child was born with 12 toes.”
Enam disclosed that the extra toes were fully formed with bones and nails, which made the situation even more shocking to people around her.
She recalled how some residents questioned what kind of taboo or spiritual sign her birth represented.
The singer said the stigma also affected her mother, who faced ridicule from members of the community because of her condition.
Despite the harsh treatment, Enam said her great grandmothers supported and protected her throughout her childhood.
“But my great-grandmothers were there for me,” she shared. “They thought I was special.”
Enam added that she later underwent surgery to remove the extra toes. She jokingly revealed during the interview that the removed toes are still being kept at a hospital laboratory and she hopes to retrieve them someday.
“I’m coming for my toes,” she said with laughter.
She also disclosed that people in the village even gave her a nickname linked to the condition. According to her, she was called “We,” which means 12 in Ewe.
“That wasn’t my name, but they gave me that name to identify the girl with the 12 toes,” she explained.
