“Benjamin Asare Is Our No.1” – Otto Addo

Following two straight clean sheets in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, 32-year-old Benjamin Asare was formally appointed the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper by Otto Addo.
The goalie for Accra Hearts of Oak received his first call-up to the national team in March and proved himself right away by preserving a clean sheet during Ghana’s decisive 5-0 victory against Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Asare preserved his spot for Monday’s match against Madagascar, helping Ghana maintain their lead in Group I with 15 points when he again recorded a shutout in a 3-0 victory.
Otto Addo praised Asare’s performances and reaffirmed his position as Ghana’s unquestioned number one in an interview with 3Sports following the game.
“He is already at the top, and I believe the next game is in June. For him, we made that choice. He had excellent training. The keepers are pushing one another in a positive environment.
“Beyond Asare’s rise, Addo also highlighted the positive competition within the squad, acknowledging the contributions of Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott.

“I’m appreciative of Ati Zigi and Wollacott’s actions this week as well as their attempts to question, support, and mentor Benjamin. It’s not something I take for granted. Well done. It was worth it for [Asare]. I’m happy for him.”
