The Ghanaian Music Industry Lacks Investors – Screwface Laments
The inability of industry gatekeepers to create support structures for the creative industry has alarmed Ghanaian musician Jehosephat Eshun, also known as Screwface in the entertainment industry.
Screwface lashed out angrily in an interview with Nana Yaw Gyebi, host of Adwumapa Mbre on Connect 97.1FM, about how some coworkers and business people minimize their craft as artists.
“These are weak structures for us.” Although I know our authorities up there are making an effort, Nigeria's creative arts cannot be compared to those in Ghana. They assist one another. There is no unity here; it is not like that. That's the issue: rather than working on ourselves, we prefer to fight each other. We enjoy underplaying things. Even the gatekeepers minimize us. We have not arrived yet.
When asked how the problem might be controlled, the artist said that state backing is essential for the expansion of the industry.
“We must first inspect our structures.” The government must also make investments in culture and the arts. I'm not just referring to music here. Filmmaking and the entire creative arts sector come to mind. Investors are necessary before we can plan forward. If we can't find investors, we'll do what we can, but it won't be much. “So if we want to draw in investors, we need excellent frameworks,” he continued.
