Born to Jamaican parents, Wright came to professional football relatively late, having trials at Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion but not attracting enough interest to win a contract.

He reverted to playing for amateur and non-League teams, leaving him disillusioned about his career prospects. After a spell of poverty, Wright spent 32 days in Chelmsford Prison for failing to pay fines for driving without tax or insurance.

He vowed to God to make it as a footballer and described his teacher, Sydney Pigden, as the first positive male figure in his life.

Wright played for London clubs Crystal Palace and Arsenal, winning the Premier League title and domestic cup competitions. He played 581 league games, scoring 287 goals for seven clubs in Scotland and England, and earned 33 caps for the England national team.
