Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte  Bardot, born on 28 September 1934 in Paris, is a French animal rights activist and former actress, singer, and model. She was born to Louis Bardot and Anne-Marie Mucel and grew up in a conservative Catholic family. Bardot suffered from amblyopia as a child, which resulted in decreased vision in her left eye.

During World War II, Bardot spent more time at home due to increasingly strict civilian surveillance. She became engrossed in dancing to records, which her mother saw as a potential for a ballet career. At the age of seven, she was admitted to the private school Cours Hattemer, where she took ballet lessons under her mother's arrangements. In 1949, she was accepted at the Conservatoire de Paris and studied at the Institut de la Tour.

Bardot was hired by Hélène Gordon-Lazareff, the director of the magazines Elle and Le Jardin des Modes, as a “junior” fashion model. She appeared on the cover of Elle again in 1952, landing an acting offer for the film Les Lauriers sont coupés from director Marc Allégret. Her parents opposed her becoming an actress, but her grandfather was supportive.

She had a leading role in 1954 in an Italian melodrama, Concert of Intrigue, and in a French adventure film, Caroline and the Rebels.

Bardot retired from the entertainment industry in 1973, having acted in 47 films, performed in several musicals, and recorded more than 60 songs. She was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1985 and later became an animal rights activist and created the Foundation. She is known for her strong personality, outspokenness, and speeches on animal defense.

Bardot has been fined twice for public insults and has been a controversial political figure, having been fined six times for inciting racial hatred when she criticized immigration and Islam in France and called residents of Réunion island “savages.” She is married to Bernard d'Ormale, a former adviser to Jean-Marie Le Pen, a far-right French politician.
