Zac Posen is a prominent fashion designer with Jewish and Polish ancestry, began his career in fashion design at a young age using yarmulkes from his grandparents' synagogue. He attended Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn and interned with fashion designer Nicole Miller during his sophomore year. Posen graduated in 1999 and was mentored by curator Richard Martin at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

At 18, he was accepted into the womenswear degree program at London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts London. In 2000, Posen received a prominent career opportunity after a dress he made for Naomi Campbell changed hands several times among fashion insiders. He is famously well-connected and has called Stella Schnabel his muse. In 2001, he returned to New York and set up an atelier in his parents' living room.

He was chosen to present a capsule collection at GenArt's Fresh Faces in Fashion New York 2001, receiving a $20,000 grant. Posen held his first runway show and was courted by fashion titans like Christian Dior director and CEO Sidney Toledano and LVMH Fashion Group president Yves Carcelle. After opening his eponymous design business on Laight Street in Manhattan's Tribeca area, Posen's brand grew in popularity among celebrities such as Natalie Portman, Claire Danes, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Kate Winslet, Rihanna, and Dick Clark.

Many celebrities have worn his designs on the red carpet. Posen has launched various cheap, ready-to-wear lines in addition to premium fashion. In late 2019, the fashion brand owners of Zac Posen's companies, House of Z and Z Spoke, announced that all business operations would be suspended immediately, shutting down Zac Posen's label.
