Dancehall can be done in Highlife style – Amboolley tells Shatta Wale, Stonbwoy others
It is becoming clear that foreign music genres, particularly Dancehall, have recently dominated the Ghanaian music market. Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are the current leaders of this genre.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, a famed Highlife artist, songwriter, and composer, believes it is improper to completely adopt the genre and make it appear as though it is a Ghanaian thing when it is not.
Even though the musical style is not indigenous to Ghana, Amboolley claims that individuals who practice it can nonetheless incorporate it into the local highlife music and claim it as their own.
The “Simigwa-Do rapper” while speaking in an interview with Kingdom FM however accepted the fact that music is dynamic hence adopting a foreign style wasn't wrong but stressed there is the need for Ghanaians to make it their own.
“We are growing and different things will happen therefore if we adopt Dancehall and play it in our own way, in our highlife format it will tell our brothers in Jamaica that we have our own style.” Amboolley told Fiifi Pratt on the show Afro Joint.
“We must adopt it a play it in highlife. It will show that we also have something which can be shared with other parts of the world”, he added.
