The “most important” record in Jay-Z’s discography has been made public.
Jay Z discussed how his third album, Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life, was a turning point in his career in an in-depth interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
“It’s the album that’s the most important because it’s the one where I perfected my songwriter craft and learned how to balance making exactly what I want,” the musician stated.
In addition, you’re a skilled songwriter. This CD is the result of combining songwriting prowess with true stories.
Vol. 2 was released in September 1998. With nearly 350,000 copies sold in its first week, Hard Knock Life became Jay-Z’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, solidifying his status as a mainstream celebrity. It topped the list for five weeks running.
With features by DMX, Ja Rule, The LOX, Jermaine Dupri, and Too Short, among others, the project went on to win Best Rap Album at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards and is still Hov’s best-selling album with six platinum sales.
