“Why Men Don’t Want To Marry Single Mothers Like Myself” – Joselyn Dumas Explains

The challenges single mothers face while attempting to reenter the dating scene have been discussed by Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas.


In a recent discussion on her YouTube channel, Joselyn Dumas shared a personal story about a friend of his who said he was reluctant to date a woman who had a child because he didn't want to be the father of a child who wasn't his biological child.

According to Dumas, this kind of thinking is part of the reason why a lot of single mothers choose to be single, since they run against prejudices because they are parents.

Even though we are single mothers of our children, we still want to be happy. We still desire to go on dates.

“Allow me to explain why we chose not to get married. I had a conversation with my friend Anthony here. “Me, I will never be with a born one,” he declared.

“Why would I come and raise somebody else's child?” was his reasoning. That is not my ancestry. There is not a speck of my DNA in him. Why am I going to support the lineage of someone now? How about mine?

He said, “And I thought to myself that this is the reason why a lot of single moms are single with their kids.”

She also questioned the disparity in perspectives about adoption, arguing that raising a child who is not biologically your own should not be seen any differently.

“‘What about adoption?' I asked. And that's different, he said. But in my opinion, not much has changed,” she remarked.

The actress underlined that sacrifice and need, rather than a choice for a single life, are frequently the reasons why single moms decide to raise their children alone.

“You are able to raise the child by yourself. You, as a woman, have also made this sacrifice. You will have this kid, and you will raise this child, whatever the circumstances may be. We don't want to be single, she clarified.
