In December 2007, Waghorn made his first team debut against Manchester United, playing in left midfield. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Sunderland in February 2008, but only appeared in the 2008-09 season against Chelsea.

Waghorn then joined Millwall on a three-month loan deal in September 2013, scoring his first goal against Derby County. He joined Derby County on August 8, 2018, and scored his first goal in a 1–4 loss against Leeds United.

In 2017, Waghorn joined Ipswich Town on a two-year contract, scoring the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Barnsley. He finished the season as the club's top scorer with 16 league goals.
