Queen Margrethe II, born on 16 April 1940, is the world's only current queen regnant and the longest-serving female head of state. Born into the House of Glücksburg, she became the heir presumptive to her father in 1953 when a constitutional amendment allowed women to inherit the throne. She married French diplomat Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1967, who had two sons, Frederik and Joachim. Margrethe succeeded her father upon his death in 1972.

She holds various official residences, including Amalienborg Palace and Fredensborg Palace, and serves as the colonel-in-chief of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in the British Army.

Prince Henrik of Denmark was the husband of Margrethe II of Denmark and served as her royal consort from her accession in 1972 until she died in 2018. Born in Talence, France, he spent his early years in Tonkin, French Indochina, and later in Cahors, France. Henrik served in the French Army during the Algerian War and worked in the diplomatic service before marrying Margrethe in 1967.

He had two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and eight grandchildren. Henrik was the first male consort to a Danish monarch and was a winemaker. He retired from royal duties in 2016 at the age of 81 and died in 2018 at Fredensborg Palace after a short illness.
