“I Almost Dropped The CAN 2008 Trophy, I Was Nervous” – Mimi Boateng Opens Up
Mimi Boateng, the young woman who lifted the AFCON trophy during the 2008 closing ceremony, confessed that she was scared and nearly dropped the trophy.
She told Pulse.com.gh in an exclusive interview that the massive throng she observed at the Accra Sports Stadium nearly overwhelmed her.
Mimi was only eight years old when Ghana hosted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2008, but she vividly recalls the event.
“I don't believe I realized how crowded the stadium was at the moment because we had usually practiced in an empty stadium.” She explained, “I don't know why, but I had the impression that the stadium may be empty.”
We practiced, so when the big day arrived, I was gazing down since the trophy was quite heavy and on my laps. A South African lady was in charge, and she was giving me instructions. “
Mimi went on to say that she was so scared that she almost dropped the award, but that she calmed down after seeing her mother on the sidelines.
So I turned to my left and saw her, and she said, “Raise it, hoist it!” As soon as I raised it and glanced up, I saw a stadium packed with people. I was so scared that I almost dropped the award.
But then I looked around and saw my mother standing on the sideline, laughing and waving at me. That, I believe, helped me feel more at ease and gave me the courage to keep going. “I realized how wonderful the whole event was at that point,” she continued.
