You Don’t Have To Bully Celebs To Attend Protests – Edem To Ghanaians

Social media has developed into a potent tool for activism and communication in recent years.

It has also observed a troubling trend in which celebrities are frequently intimidated or coerced into taking part in various discussions and demonstrations, sometimes against their choice.

Denning Edem Hotor, often known as Edem, a rising star in Ghanaian music, has responded by urging his countrymen to stop forcing famous people to take part in protests against the government and top officials.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Slim on Hitz Fm’s Daybreak Hitz, the ‘Over Again’ hitmaker explained that forcing celebrities to comply with certain principles is a form of psychological bullying. He emphasized that while celebrities do have a platform and influence, they should not be coerced or harassed to take part in demonstrations.

“That’s a certain level of psychological bullying of somebody who is an individual…If you believe that you have to bully an artist to go for a demonstration, do you also believe that an artist should bully you for you to attend their concert?” he quizzed.

“Because when it is time for their concert and they tell you, you tell them that ‘I don’t have money for it’ and so you cannot bully an artist. I’m sure that the ones who also went, some of them had backlash that they went for PR and so the truth is that you cannot live up to people’s expectations,” he noted.

Edem asserted that his decision not to attend the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest stemmed from his belief that most major demonstrations in the country’s history have failed to yield any major results.

“What I have understood is that from Nkrumah’s time, there have been about 16 demos, and usually, power changes hands. If that happens, and we have demos again, then it means we need to find new ways to address these issues… It’s a way for young people and a group of people to register their displeasure about something,” he said.

The crooner, to a greater extent averred that he will only join a demonstration which will bring a significant change in the lives of Ghanaians.

“My son and daughter don’t care about the demos… This demo should spark a bigger action, ” Edem noted
