Da Hammer, the legendary Hip-hop record engineer, and producer, has weighed in on Ghana’s numerous award schemes, claiming that they usually cause musicians to get depressed.

The style and manner in which the different awards in the nation are arranged was created by the Last Two Entertainment Record Label head, and it ends up hurting most musicians in the country by pushing them into despair rather than appreciating them for their efforts.

He claimed that he can bring up a Hiphop rapper like Okomfour Kwabee, who was despondent after losing an award a few years ago.

Over the weekend, Da Hammer said on Multimedia’s Accra-based Akan radio station Asempa FM that the industry should take a critical look at how various awards are conducted in Ghana.

He wondered aloud how an artist could be nominated for nine categories in one edition of an award, get a front-row seat in the theatre during the ceremony, and then leave without receiving a single prize.

He claimed that most musicians are compelled to turn off their phones after failing to win anything on awards night in order to avoid individuals and trolls that frequent social media, using Takoradi-based Hiplife/ Hip Hop rapper Pappy Kojo as an example.

Hammer said that he knows of many musicians who have suffered from despair as a result of not winning an award, and he encouraged the country’s different award systems to change their methods.
