His mother, Afeni Shakur, was born as Alice Faye Williams. She played a vital role in his life, instilling in him a sense of resilience and determination. Afeni was a prominent Black Panther activist and her influence shaped Tupac's understanding of social justice issues. After the execution of the last Incan ruler, Tupac Amaru II in 1781, Afeni Shakur renamed his son Lesane Parish Crooks to Tupac Amaru Shakur and explained ‘'”I wanted him to have the name of revolutionary, indigenous people in the world. I wanted him to know he was part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood''.
While Tupac's father, Billy Garland, wasn't as present in his life, their relationship had its complexities. Despite their differences, Tupac acknowledged his father's influence on his artistic expression and his ability to navigate the world as a Black man.
