“Hawa Koomson Wrote This Letter” – Bridget Otoo After Seeing ‘Fishers’ In A Press Released By Fisheries Commission
Ghanaians used to refer to seamen and women as fishermen until Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson, in charge of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, came on board with her term “fishers” to replace the fishermen term.
The phrase “fishers” is an out-of-use archaic English noun. Branch and Kleiber (2017) describe this history, but they don't specify which term should be used. The rising usage of the term “fishers” in scientific literature is an attempt to be gender-neutral, but it falls short on numerous counts.
First and foremost, no one has asked fishermen and women what they think, and they do not approve. The word offended some female fishers since it implied they weren't performing the same work as males.
In other words, the term “fishing” refers to people of all genders, including transgender people.
Ghanaian broadcaster and staunch fan of the NDC, Madam Bridget Otoo, today posted a press release by the fisheries commission which is cautioning fishermen to adhere to weather reports by the meteorological agency so that they can stay safe.
Upon seeing fishers used instead of fisherman, the Metro TV journalist said she knew it was Hawa Koomson who wrote the letter because she could not do away with her “fishers.”
