I Wish To See Kotoka Removed From Our Airport – KSM
The naming of an airport after Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka has been criticized by media personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) as being disgusting.
Kotoka, who was born on September 26th, 1926, was a member of the National Liberation Council, which seized control on February 24th, 1966, as a result of a military coup. The first president of the nation, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was deposed in this manner.
During World War II in 1946, the British Royal Air Force utilized the current airport, Kotoka International Airport, as a military airfield.
Following the military's effective withdrawal, the facility was turned over to civilian control. In 1956, a construction project was started to transform the structure into a terminal building in response to globalization and the rising demand for air travel at the time.
When the project was finished, Ghana Airways was ready to use the airport as its home base in 1958.
A maximum of 500,000 passengers per year were allowed for the airport's initial planning and commissioning. In honor of the late Lt. General E.K. Kotoka, the Accra International Airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969.
On January 1, 2023, KSM expressed his desire for the name to be altered in a tweet.
“At the risk of angering many, my wish is to see the name of Kotoka removed from the airport. It's a disgrace to our history. Happy new year,” KSM wrote on Twitter.
