Speaking on The Doreen Avio Show, Ghanaian singer Kuami Eugene explained what winning the 2019 VGMA for “new artist of the year” meant to him personally.

It was a huge ambition realized, one that the artist, who was 23 at the time, had long harbored.

The highlife and Afrobeat singer-songwriter had fantasized about his rivals stealing the awards even before his thoughts came true.

“I once had a dream,” he recalled. It was the year's best new artist. I was there, along with Kurl Songx, King Promise, Darko Vibes, KiDi, and Kwesi Arthur. There was fierce rivalry. I had a dream that I didn't accept the prize two days before the ceremony. I awoke. I was in no way feeling well. I must offer prayers to keep the boys away. I asked my mother to join me in prayer. The lads are against my winning.

He claims that it was difficult for him to let go of what seemed to be his greatest musical achievement, so he had to fight the battle in prayer.

According to Kuami Eugene, King Promise received the award in his dream.

The entire VGMA impact was in full force since it was my first time using the VGMA platform, and seeing Kuami Eugene on that platform for the first time was fresh in my mind. I found it tough to let go of it. I truly needed to win the “new artist of the year” award since the competition was fierce. One day, he added, he hoped to be able to tell his children a wonderful tale about how he was the first person in his age group to receive the “New Artist of the Year” award.
