“We Play For A Country That Everyone Expects You To Win Every Game” – Gideon Mensah Sadly Says
Defender Gideon Mensah of Ghana has reportedly spoken out against the Black Stars’ 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) loss to Cape Verde, according to Pulse Ghana.
At the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Sunday, Ghana lost 2-1 to the Blue Sharks, a sad result for the left defender who was in action.
However, after the Black Stars fell against Cape Verde by a score of two goals to one, Ghanaians were extremely critical of the team, with some even advocating for the suspension of some players for the following match.
Speaking to reporters following Ghana’s victory over Cape Verde, Mensah acknowledged the strain of representing his country.
The 25-year-old expressed his dissatisfaction and insisted that the players understand that winning every game is expected of them.
He said, as quoted:
“This is not how we wanted to start the tournament. We have another game and we can make ourselves proud,” he said.
“We play for a country where everyone is expecting us to win every game. We’re going in with the same pressure and the same hunger.”
