“Ghanaians See Highlife Artistes As Villagers” – Dada Halfco

Most highlife musicians, according to Dada Hafco, would not admit it because most people believe highlife musicians are villagers. This tendency, he continued, is not new because highlife artists were once derided as being too regional.

Dada Hafco, when asked about the likelihood of highlife dying with the departure of legends like Amakye Dede and Daddy Lumba, refuted the allegation.

Highlife-infused songs, he claims, have gotten a lot of radio in the last ten years. He claims that the main issue is that highlife musicians do not identify with the genre.

“There are a lot of artists in Ghana who would never declare themselves highlife artists if the VGMA hadn’t put them in the highlife categories.”

On the TV3 NewDay show, Terry Asare Boamah, known Dada Hafco, explained the cover-up to Cookie Tee. He claims that this is due to the genre’s early musical identity. Every genre had its own distinct aesthetic, especially when it came to stage performances.

Nana Ampadu, who is known for his signature accessories, and Obourba both have unique color combinations, according to him. As a result, highlife musicians’ ‘local’ appearance was thankfully avoided, as Ghanaians are naturally attracted to foreign elements.

To increase visibility on the global music market, he advocated for a national reorientation of the genre. He claims that other countries have successfully marketed and profited from their own genre, and Ghana must follow suit.
