Ghana music is slowly losing its touch due to pressure exerted by certain groups of people – Medikal
Ghanaian rapper, Medikal has addressed the pressure he perceives to exist in the music industry in a moving letter to his peers and other industry participants.
The ‘Omo Ada' singer claims that the pressure put on some groups and individuals to produce hit songs and outdo one another has resulted in a toxic preoccupation with pursuing financial success at any costs.
On August 26, 2023, Medikal, 30, clearly communicated his ideas to his followers on X, formerly Twitter, in a tweet.
“Ghana music is slowly losing its touch and sauce due to loads of pressure exerted by certain group of people. The focus of fun and entertainment is gradually being swayed from entertainment to a target/goal. N/B Music Nobi competition,” he tweeted.
Traditionally, music has been a medium of self-expression, storytelling, and a mirror reflecting society's joys and struggles.
The drive to “make it big” now appears to have obscured these crucial elements.
In order to fit into predictable patterns that are deemed more marketable, artists like Medikal feel pressured, which frequently results in songs that lack the distinctive flavors and genuineness that have characterized Ghanaian music for decades.
He asserts that the pressure of expectations is gradually diluting the “sauce” that has always been a crucial component of Ghanaian music.
Following the recent success of Nigerian singers like Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake, who have all performed in historic concerts abroad, the industry has been subjected to ongoing critiques.
