“We First Met Our Father When We Were 14” – DopeNation
The only way that Michael and Tony Boafo of Ghanaian music group Dopenation knew where their father, a Fante, was was through his frequent travels, which caused them to become alienated from him for fourteen years.
When they were fourteen years old and faced their father, the story took a significant turn. The family, who were raised in the Accra neighborhood of Abeka by their mother, a caterer, were forced to move to Takoradi when their mother changed careers.
On February 4, 2024, Michael and Tony—who are now members of the well-known Ghanaian music group DopeNation—spoke about their experiences in an interview with The Delay Show.
They related how their mother, who is of Ewe ancestry, relocated to Takoradi for employment without telling them that their father lived there. They all contributed to the story, finishing each other’s sentences as they related what had happened.
“Our mother used to work for Unilever,” they recalled. “Our dad worked as a principal at Takoradi Technical Institute, and she resided in a guest house.” It wasn’t until our mother began working in Takoradi that she realized he was really there.
When asked about their initial impression of their father, they said it was “interesting.”
When it became clear that they both had dark skin, it was a turning point in their relationship. Since our mother has fairly pale skin, we have always been curious about our ancestry. We look like dad in certain aspects, but altogether, we actually look like our mother.
Bonding with their father takes time, as one might anticipate. Although the incubation time was lengthy, their father’s acts of providing for them—such as purchasing them things, picking them up from school, and showing them his properties—helped to speed up the process.
They said, “It was easy to build a relationship with him.” An implicit discussion about “where have you been and how has life been” took place. We didn’t talk about that at first since we weren’t a good fit.
