“Religion Is The Root Of Hatred In Ghana” – Sister Derby
Religious prejudice has been attributed to the hostility of the LGBTQI+ community in Ghana by vocalist and LGBTQI+ campaigner Deborah Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Derby.
She thinks Ghanaians have deeply ingrained views on homosexuality due to their religious beliefs and are unable to be persuaded to hold different views. Thus, the hatred is directed at those who are part of the LGBTQI+ group.
Community members, according to Deborah Vanessa, should not have to struggle to have their rights respected; they are only asking for a country that would accord them that respect.
“Where all of this hatred and misunderstanding stems from… We detest one another for things like these. Religion seems to be the main cause. For many negative things, that is the underlying reason. I am not religious, but I believe in supernatural power,” she said.
