Lydia Forson Blasts EC For Defying All Odds To Compile New Voters Register

Popular Ghanaian actress and outspoken socialite, Lydia Forson has slammed the Electoral Commission fro going against all warnings consequent on the dangerous COVID-19 pandemic to go ahead and compile a new voters register for the upcoming general election.

The EC has been cautioned on several occasions by many health authorities to eschew from compiling a new register since it will defeat the purpose of social distancing in order to curb the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

But The EC revealed recently revealed that it will still go ahead with its plans to compile a new voters register by following strict protocols from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana health service.

In a statement made by Sylvia Annor, Acting Public Affairs Director of the EC, she said that the EC cannot withdraw the compilation since it has already made plans for the exercise to be executed.

The statement reads;

“All stakeholders are hereby reminded that plans are far advanced for the compilation of a new voter register with a new voter management system for the upcoming 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.”

The EC reminded the people of its status in the constitution saying that it is an autonomous body that does not seek permission or approval from any organization or individual to carry out its activities.

“The Electoral Commission reiterated its independence saying “as stated in Articles 46 of the 1992 Constitution, the EC will like to reiterate that it shall not be subject to the direction or control of any person or authority in the performance of its functions except as provided for in the constitution or any other law consistent with it.” 

But Lydia contends that the EC is in bed with the government for their selfish gains.

She said:“At this point it's obvious the EC is serving it's own interest and not that of the people”.
