“I Was Betrayed When The Black Stars Armband Was Taken From Me” – Asamoah Gyan

Ahead of his book launch on April 30th, 2022, former Ghanaian skipper Asamoah Gyan, better known as Baby Jet, has revealed he felt betrayed when the captain's armband was taken from him and was given to Dede Ayew.

“I felt betrayed (when the Captain's armband was taken from me in 2019) so I couldn't control my emotions. People who know everything behind the scenes, know I was betrayed,” he said.

After being deposed from the captaincy in 2019, Asamoah Gyan spoke out over the Black Stars captain's armband, which was awarded to Andre Dede Ayew.

If he were Ayew, Gyan believes he would have turned down the captaincy ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Gyan stated in an interview with Joy FM in Accra that the captaincy concerns had no bearing on the team's performance at the AFCON.

He went on to say that Dede should have declined the offer to be captain of the team.

“He's a nice fellow.” He didn't have much of a choice but to accept it. I don't blame him, but I wouldn't have done it if I were him. “

Many people have pointed out that Gyan was appointed captain of the Black Stars after John Mensah was demoted to general captain.
